On Friday the 27th of September, we set off on a Parish Pilgrimage to Holycross Abbey, the beautiful 12th century former Cistercian Abbey, now a working parish church. The church displays the Relic of the True Cross of Christ (which gives Holycross its name). We were very fortunate to have John Bourke as our guide on the day, John provided us with a detailed knowledge of the history of the Abbey from early times and the importance of the restoration to the Community right up to the present time. A few parishioners got a chance to ring the oldest church bell in Ireland “Michael”, which is almost 800 years old. After the guided tour we had time to have a little wander, with a visit to the gift shop and the magnificent outdoor Stations of the Cross.
